What Is 8.5T Flatbed Transport?

8.5T flatbed transport uses a vehicle with an open loading platform rather than an enclosed body. This provides flexible access for loading and unloading and is suitable for a wide range of loads including building materials, timber, steelwork, machinery, equipment and pallets.

Our own 8.5 tonne flatbed can be loaded and unloaded from the side or rear where suitable. Depending on the load and site facilities, cargo can be loaded onto or off the flatbed using a forklift, crane, HIAB or other suitable lifting equipment.

Important note: 8.5T refers to the vehicle's gross vehicle weight category, not its payload. The actual payload depends on the vehicle specification, body, equipment, fuel, driver, load distribution and legal operating limits.

Can Flatbed Transport Be Combined with HIAB Loading?

Yes. Where required, a flatbed transport job may be combined with HIAB or crane loading and unloading, subject to the load and site requirements.

This can be useful where suitable lifting equipment is not available at the collection or delivery location. The HIAB or crane can load the item onto the flatbed and, where appropriate, unload or position it at the delivery site.

Important note: HIAB or crane requirements must be confirmed before booking. Not every load or location is suitable for crane lifting.

  • Lifting points
  • Required crane reach
  • Access at collection and delivery
  • Ground conditions
  • Required positioning
  • Suitable vehicle and crane availability

How Our Flatbed Transport Process Works

1

Send Us the Job Details

Send the collection and delivery postcodes, photos of the load, approximate weight, dimensions and any access information.

2

We Review the Load & Requirements

We assess the load type, size, weight, loading method, securing requirements and whether our 8.5t flatbed is suitable.

3

We Check Access & Loading

We review access at collection and delivery, including whether side, rear or overhead loading is required and what equipment is available for loading and unloading.

4

We Confirm the Suitable Transport

Where our 8.5t flatbed is suitable, we confirm the transport requirements. If another vehicle or lifting method is more appropriate, we can advise on an alternative such as HIAB or another suitable transport option.

5

We Provide a Quote & Arrange Transport

Once we understand the route, load, access and loading requirements, we provide a quotation. Once confirmed, the load is collected, secured, transported and delivered using the agreed method.

Distance & Journey

The distance to the collection point and onward journey to the delivery location can affect the overall transport cost.

Load Weight & Dimensions

The load's weight, length, width and height determine whether the 8.5t flatbed is suitable and how much available payload and deck space is required.

Loading & Unloading

The loading and unloading method, including the use of forklifts, cranes or HIAB equipment, can affect the time and cost of the job.

Access & Site Conditions

Restricted access, difficult ground conditions, limited turning space or additional positioning requirements may increase the time required.

Time & Vehicle Requirements

Loading time, unloading time, waiting time and any additional vehicle or equipment requirements can affect the final quotation.

8.5T Flatbed Transport FAQ

8.5T flatbed transport uses an open-deck vehicle designed to carry suitable loads where flexible loading and unloading access is beneficial. Our own 8.5 tonne flatbed can transport building materials, timber, steelwork, machinery, equipment, pallets and other suitable loads, subject to weight, dimensions, access and loading requirements.

No. 8.5T refers to the vehicle's gross vehicle weight category, not its payload. The actual payload depends on the vehicle specification, body, equipment, fuel, driver, load distribution and legal operating limits. We assess the actual load before confirming suitability.

Our flatbed can transport a wide range of suitable loads, including building materials, timber, steelwork and fabrications, pallets and stillages, machinery and equipment, generators and compressors, agricultural equipment, and fencing and outdoor materials. Suitability depends on the load's weight, dimensions, securing requirements, loading method and access.

Neither is automatically better. The most suitable vehicle depends on the load and how it needs to be loaded and unloaded. A flatbed can be particularly useful where an open deck, side access or crane or forklift loading is required, while a van may be more suitable where the load needs enclosed protection.

Yes, where the load and site conditions allow. The open deck provides flexible access for loading and unloading from the side or rear, depending on the equipment and method being used.

Yes. Where required, flatbed transport may be combined with HIAB or crane loading and unloading, subject to the load, crane capacity, reach, access, ground conditions and lifting requirements. Any HIAB requirements should be confirmed before booking.

Yes. Suitable construction materials can include timber, steel, blocks, panels, insulation, paving and other building materials, subject to their weight, dimensions, securing requirements and loading method.

Yes. Our 8.5t flatbed can be suitable for steelwork, timber, machinery, equipment and other loads that can be safely loaded, secured and transported within the vehicle's legal weight and dimensional limits.

Not necessarily. The loading and unloading method depends on the load and site facilities. Where required, a forklift, crane, HIAB or other suitable lifting equipment may be used. If you are unsure what is required, provide the load and access details when requesting a quote.

Suitable loads may be capable of being covered, depending on the load, dimensions, securing requirements and available covering method. If the load needs protection from weather or road conditions, tell us when requesting the quote so this can be assessed.

Yes. Our own 8.5 tonne flatbed can be used for suitable transport requirements throughout the UK. The collection and delivery locations do not need to be in Lincolnshire.

We normally need the collection postcode, delivery postcode, load description, dimensions, approximate weight, photographs, number of items, pallets or packages, loading and unloading method, available lifting equipment, access information, preferred collection date and time, and any covering or securing requirements.

Usually, yes. For straightforward enquiries, we can often provide a price quickly once we have the collection and delivery details, load information and required timing. More complex loads, unusual access, specialist loading requirements or jobs requiring additional transport arrangements may take longer to assess before we can provide an accurate quotation.
